The right training and placement to overcome barriers

Injury can happen any time and to anyone and the challenges of getting back into the workforce after long term unemployment can be tough.Zoltan working as a gardener

For almost 20 years, Zoltan Toth worked in various physically demanding roles. After 20 years of repeated strenuous movements, his body started to suffer. He sustained persistent back injuries which impacted his ability to maintain permanent employment. As a result, Zoltan found himself under a lot of mental and financial distress.

In 2007, Zoltan's injury prevented him from working altogether and he found himself unemployed while undergoing recovery and physiotherapy. During this time, Centrelink referred Zoltan to CRS Australia.

'I was in a very low state, unhappy and frustrated and not getting anywhere in life. CRS Australia listened to my concerns and understood where I wanted to go,' said Zoltan.

CRS Australia Rehabilitation Consultant, Madeline assessed Zoltan's injuries and work history and identified potential jobs that he would be able to do without further aggravating his back condition. The assessment identified Zoltan's experience and skills were best suited to a job where he could work outdoors. CRS Australia found an opportunity for Zoltan to work as a gardener at the Central Gippsland Health Service (CGHS).

Rod Cusack, Engineering Services Manager of CGHS believed in Zoltan and offered him a six-week on-the-job training placement. With the assistance of CRS Australia, Zoltan completed a manual handling course where he learned to operate equipment safely and learned strategies to avoid straining his back. CRS Australia worked closely with CGHS and conducted a work site assessment identifying equipment needed to assist Zoltan in performing his duties. CGHS
funded a modified tractor seat and an extended wheelbarrow handle to ensure Zoltan could perform his tasks without aggravating his back condition.

Zoltan's hardworking nature and ability impressed Rod and his team. He has now secured a permanent position with CGHS.

'We understood how hard it can be to get back to work after injury but Zoltan showed us that he is as capable as any of our employees,' said Rod. 'He has become a valued and trusted member of the team.'

'I am now on top of the world and I look forward to coming to work each day,' said Zoltan.
