Road to rehabilitation an inspiration

Paul has travelled a brave and confronting journey since a workplace injury in the 1980s left him suffering multiple, complex brain and spinal injuries.

‘I went from a healthy, fit, confident and competent 26-year old with a full life laid out in front of me, to a person that wanted to take no part in the life that was thrown in front of me,’ said Paul.

Following years of confusion and challenges related to his rehabilitation, Paul started a program with CRS Australia’s Port Macquarie team in 2000.

Paul met with his Rehabilitation Consultant, Leanne, who was committed to helping Paul return to work.

‘For the first time in 14 years I believed that I had found someone who was not only able to help me, but actually wanted to,’ said Paul of Leanne.

CRS Australia assisted Paul with his return to work plan, working closely with Comcare, the Commonwealth workers compensation authority.

’Under the Safety Rehabilitation Compensation legislation introduced in 1988, Comcare and employers were encouraged to provide funding and support for rehabilitation,’ said Hari Nittoo, Claims Services Officer at Comcare.

With persistence and support, Paul identified a new employment goal and started studies for a Diploma in Law offered by the Legal Profession Admission Board to get qualified as a solicitor.

‘I wasn’t prepared for how I would feel when I started the course,’ said Paul. ‘The transition from someone who believed that there was no chance of rehabilitation to someone who was starting a new life with achievable goals and ambitions was incredibly emotional.’

During his studies, CRS Australia assisted Paul with access to assistive tools including voice recognition software and suitable assistance during exams. Paul also started a work trial with a local law firm that lasted three years.

‘Throughout that time Leanne stayed closely involved in the whole process, solving mobility and access issues that popped up every now and then, and giving me encouragement and support when it was needed,’ said Paul.

‘I can’t really express how much Leanne and the CRS people helped me through what was an overwhelming time of adjustment for me,’ said Paul. ‘I can honestly say that without the shared sincerity and passion for their work I would not be on the cusp of starting paid employment.’
