Lending a hand to the Victorian bushfire relief effort
6 March 2009
CRS Australia continues to provide staff, advice and support for the bushfire affected communities of Victoria. Working in conjunction with national and state agencies, CRS Australia’s allied health professionals are well suited to assist in the recovery process.
Initially CRS Australia volunteered staff to operate in relief centres in Whittlesea, Healesville, Diamond Creek, Traralgon and Warragul, where support included linking and referring affected people to appropriate services and prioritising their needs.
Subsequently and as part of the coordinated Commonwealth response, 40 CRS Australia case managers have been deployed to the fire affected communities. Staff are focusing on meeting the specific requirements of the many people in need, such as organising insurance to more serious matters such as assisting with funeral arrangements.
Margaret Carmody, General Manager, CRS Australia, says, ‘This role is one we are well skilled to handle. Our staff are counsellors, social workers, psychologists, and other qualified allied health professionals who understand how trauma impacts on mental health.’
CRS Australia will continue its contribution to the bushfire relief effort for as long as is required.

Victorian bushfires and re-establishing identity
18 February 2009
The Australian Government is helping affected individuals re-establish their identity through the following measures:
- re-issuing of key proof of identity documents
- linking people with a variety of Commonwealth and Victorian agencies to ensure their contact details or circumstances are updated
- streamlining arrangements to replace passports that were damaged or destroyed as a result of the bushfires, free of charge until 10 February 2010
- issuing travel documents to any affected overseas born Australian citizens without the need for an overseas birth certificate
- assisting Australians or foreign nationals who wish to re-acquire copies of documents issued by foreign countries.
These measures will also ensure that payments are delivered more efficiently to people who need them in this difficult time. Anyone seeking more information, assistance in obtaining these documents or additional support at this time is encouraged to contact Centrelink or Medicare Australia staff in Emergency Recovery Centres, and Centrelink and Medicare offices across Victoria.
More information on re-establishing identity is available from the Disaster Assist website.
