New life for job seeker with disability
29 November 2007
One year ago, Adam Woodhouse found himself at a difficult point in his life. With severe pain in his right arm, due to carpal tunnel syndrome and a compressed nerve in his elbow, he was forced to leave his career as a butcher – something he’d done for 16 years.
Feeling the stress of having no income and a young family to support, Adam approached Centrelink who referred him to CRS Australia in Ballina.
Adam, with the help of CRS Australia, learnt to manage his condition as well as alternative methods of working with his arm. He also began to research the types of work he wanted to do and realised that he had always been interested in working in a bank. After compiling a resume and being coached in job search skills, Adam began to gain the confidence he needed to canvass employers.
Adam gave the manager at the local ANZ bank his resume and was called for an interview soon after. CRS Australia helped him with clothing for his interview and practiced introductions and interview questions. Adam impressed the panel and was offered a job immediately.
Adam says, ‘CRS Australia played such an important role in guiding and coaching me towards getting a job. The training, preparation and constant encouragement was amazing and I couldn’t have done this without them.’
A year later and Adam couldn’t be happier. He is thoroughly enjoying his job, and his dedication has resulted in him receiving several promotions.
Adam Woodhouse is just one of the many people with disability who bring a range of diverse skills, talent and abilities to the workplace.
International Day of People with Disability on Monday 3 December celebrates the abilities, contributions and achievements that people with disability make every day.
