New direction brings opportunity

John Ring had a long career in the printing industry. In 1995, a serious workplace accident turned life on its head.

My hands got caught in a huge printing press, John recalled.John Ring

'When the paramedics wanted to do an on-site amputation I thought I'm going to be armless, jobless and I'm going to lose everything. I insisted they keep trying to get my arms out, and they did.'

John's arms were crushed. He had ten surgeries and extensive physiotherapy to help return some function and flexibility to his hands.

John initially returned to work as a print machinist, but it caused severe pain in his hands.

John said, 'I wanted to leave the industry but I couldn't. Printing was all I knew. I had a wife, kids, a mortgage and bills to pay, so changing career wasn't an option.

'Then the unexpected happened. The company I worked for closed down and I lost my job. I'd worked in the one industry for over 20 years so I'd never written a job application or resume. I applied for so many things and I kept getting knocked back.

'All of a sudden I found myself in a situation where I can't get work and I started to get depressed.

'My life is on an upwards spiral. I love my job. I really have to thank CRS Australia for putting opportunities in front of me that have changed my life.'

'My wife suggested I contact CRS Australia, and eventually, I did,' he said.

In 2009, after being unemployed for 18 months, John met with CRS Australia who worked with him to understand his condition, work capacity and skills to find suitable job options.

He explored various interests and extended his skills base. He tried traffic management but the cold outdoor temperatures caused acute pain.

CRS Australia suggested John do a Certificate III in Customer Service and Business through Aegis Australia, which could lead to employment in its call centre.
Working in an office environment and with computers was something John had never done before.

He said, 'Instead of being fearful I grabbed it with both arms!'

A few months later John got a job as a call centre trainer in the Academy at Aegis. He's become a valued member of the Aegis team, a place where he feels at home.

'My life is on an upwards spiral. I love my job. I really have to thank CRS Australia for putting opportunities in front of me that have changed my life.'
