Local valued employer

Whyalla is a mining town, located on the Eastern Eyre Peninsula about 400km northwest of Adelaide. Commonly known as part of the Iron Triangle – an area that extends to include three cities: Port Augusta, Port Pirie and Whyalla – the town relies heavily on local businesses for services and employment.

Whyalla Garden Centre

Whyalla Garden Centre is a successful small garden retail business, with less than 20 staff, selling a variety of goods including plants, pots, garden furniture,  collectables and garden care products.

A relationship has been built between the Whyalla Garden Centre and CRS Australia over the last few years, resulting in successful job placements for job  seekers with an injury, disability or health condition.

‘We first took on a suitable CRS Australia job seeker in 2008,’ said Leanne, Assistant Manager of the Centre.

Since that successful placement, Whyalla Garden Centre and CRS Australia have been working together in partnership to find the right candidates.

All up, seven job vacancies over the past two years have been offered to CRS Australia job seekers.

‘The consultants from CRS Australia have developed a sound understanding of Whyalla Garden Centre’s recruitment needs and regularly visit us to review our workplace requirements,’ said Leanne.

'CRS Australia is now our first contact when we have a job vacancy to fill.'

Whyalla Garden Centre has employed individuals with varying disabilities to work in their local store and each has settled into the small, productive team. Leanne and Manager Bruce Higgins also takes great care in making sure the team is well resourced to prevent injuries or accidents.

‘We take pride in having the correct manual handling devices for all staff available within the store including forklifts, sack trucks and trolleys,’ said Leanne.

Whyalla Garden Centre was recognised for their commitment to employing people with a disability with a CRS Australia 2010 SA Employer Award.

Leanne and Bruce were excited to receive the award, ‘We are extremely grateful for the recognition and for being considered a valued employer’.

‘CRS Australia is now our first contact when we have a job vacancy to fill,’ said Leanne.
