Finding new hope

When Amany and her family moved from Egypt to Australia in 1990, she was excited about the move to a new country. With a degree in Archaeology (Egyptology) from Cairo University, and impressive experience including the discovery of six golden mummies, she was looking forward to sharing her knowledge of Ancient Civilisation.
Despite her qualifications, and more than five years of job search, Amany was unable to find suitable employment in Australia.
Amany, who suffered from Osteoarthritis, had registered with an employment agency and was offered jobs that did not reflect her qualifications or were unsuitable due to her health condition.
The extended period of time out of the workforce caused Amany to lose confidence and she began to suffer depression. At the time Centrelink referred her to CRS Australia, Amany felt that she would never find work in the field she loves most – teaching Egyptology.
Rehabilitation consultant, Shelley, from CRS Australia’s Joondalup office in Western Australia, provided vocational counselling to Amany to help her to identify the barriers she was facing in finding employment. CRS Australia also ensured that a safe work goal was chosen which would not exacerbate Amany’s Osteoarthritis.

Shelley organised for Amany to attend a self-esteem course and computer short-courses to boost her confidence and update her work skills.
Amany worked with Shelley to update her resume so she could approach suitable employers. When a position came up with the Western Australian museum, Amany applied and was successful.
Amany now works part-time at the Museum, helping school children discover the world of ancient Egypt. She is also teaching programs at the University of Western Australia and is exploring options for further self-employment.
