Injury prevention leads to a change in culture

Main Roads WA (Main Roads) is a government organisation responsible for 18,000 kilometres of Western Australia's road network. In 2006, Main Roads started a partnership with CRS Australia to develop a more systematic approach to workplace health and safety.

CRS Australia's WA Injury Prevention Coordinator, Sharyn Moore, conducted risk assessments to identify and manage hazardous manual work and ergonomic workstation assessments for office employees. CRS Australia also trained regional staff in manual task risk assessment and workstation ergonomics to assist employees manage risks in their workplace.

Michael Leeks, Main Roads Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Manager says, 'Our approach is very much about empowering staff with the knowledge to manage risks themselves...and about being proactive in identifying and managing hazards'.

Main Roads now has a consistent approach to managing hazardous manual work while taking into account local requirements. Consulting with regional employees in the risk assessment process provided them with an opportunity to develop local and sustainable solutions.

CRS Australia continues to partner with Main Roads in high risk work areas to help to minimise risks to employees.

Michael says, 'As well as a significant reduction in manual handling incidents, we're also seeing a change in the culture, so we're getting a lot more early reporting of incidents and requests for ergonomic assessments when people move workstations'.

Main Roads were presented with three major awards OSH in 2008; the Gold WorkSafe Plan Certificate of Achievement, the state WorkSafe WA Award in the category of Best Workplace Safety & Health Management System and a CRS Australia OSH Award.
