Injury prevention adds value

The Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC) provides educational services to more than 800 children who have significant hearing and/or vision impairments. This includes their Teleschool Program which reaches children all over Australia using video conferencing technology.

In early 2008, with the RIDBC Board showing increasing interest in occupational health and safety (OHS) best practice, the Human Resources team decided to conduct an audit to ensure its policies and procedures were continuing to meet legislative requirements and developments.

'We needed to reassure ourselves that we were following best practice,' says Rob Walker, RIDBC Human Resources Manager.

Although RIDBC already had an OHS provider for their ongoing services; Rob, along with Lesley Nelson, RIDBC Human Resources Advisor, wanted to engagean independent provider to conduct the audit and approached CRS Australia.

CRS Australia's NSW Injury Prevention Coordinator, Sandina Bailey, conducted a thorough review of the RIDBC policy documents. She also visited the workplace to observe processes and interview staff about their safety practices.

Rob is happy with the services CRS Australia has provided to RIDBC, saying, 'Sandina provides professional, good quality occupational health advice'.

The audit demonstrated that RIDBC was compliant with OHS standards and meeting best practice, however some areas for improvement were identified. RIDBC has worked with Sandina to implement recommendations from the audit report.

Rob and Lesley have developed a checklist to keep the RIDBC Board updated on progress and plan to conduct a reassessment in 2010 to ensure improvements are being made.

'It just makes sense to get Sandina to do the reassessment; she knows the environment. That time has already been invested. Sandina certainly
has the capacity and credibility to do the job,' Rob says.
