Strong working partnership

Since 2005, Morwell City Taxis, based in Victoria, has employed 12 CRS Australia job seekers.

Director of Morwell City Taxis, Carmen Giddens, has worked with Tony, CRS Australia's Gippsland employment services consultant to develop an innovative on-the-job training program. The aim was to help people with a disability gain the skills and capabilities they need to work in the taxi industry.

Morwell City Taxis and CRS Australia have developed a strong partnership. When a job opportunity arises, Morwell approaches CRS Australia for job seekers who would be suited to the position available. Similarly, when a job seeker shows an interest in taxi driving or a related area, CRS Australia gets in touch with Morwell City Taxis to explore options for work experience or employment.

I have found that people with a disability consistently demonstrate a positive attitude and dedication to their job.

'Morwell City Taxis is a role model for other employers. Their training model for hiring people with a disability has been endorsed by the Victorian Taxi Association's State Council and adopted by other Victorian taxi companies,' says Vincent, CRS Australia's manager for the Gippsland region.

In fact, 2007 saw Morwell City Taxis take the Prime Minister's Employer of the Year Award in the medium business category. The annual national awards recognise excellence in the employment of people with disability.

'I have found that people with a disability are not only well-suited to the taxi industry, but they have consistently demonstrated a positive attitude and dedication to their job. This has led to a motivated, committed team and a low employee turnover, which clearly makes good business sense,' says Carmen.
