CRS Australia initiative benefits Port Augusta
21 April 2010
Six Port Augusta residents with a disability, injury or health condition have successfully obtained a job following on from a partnership between disability employment services provider, CRS Australia, national retailer BIG W, South Australia Works and Registered Training Organisation, PEGASOS STRATEGIC TRAINING Pty Ltd (Pegasos Training).
CRS Australia’s Port Augusta office, located at Shop 1, Normco Building, 5 Young Street, approached BIG W in August 2009 after learning the national retailer was keen to find motivated and suitable employees. The initiative involved CRS Australia job seekers completing a Certificate II in Retail Operations through Pegasos Training and then undertaking work experience and employment opportunities with BIG W once they obtained certification. South Australia Works’ part-funded the project.
Within three months, six job seekers found employment as a direct result of the project, five with BIG W and one in another retail environment.
At the BIG W graduation ceremony, Michael Bornholdt, Manager, BIG W, presented eight CRS Australia job seekers with certificates. Mr Bornholdt said, ‘The project has been a positive experience for all parties. BIG W obtained keen and enthusiastic employees who are now trained in retail operations and willing to learn new tasks on the job. We hope another joint project will run in Port Augusta in late 2010.’
Former job seeker, David Pepper, commented that ‘the course really opened up my eyes to what goes on in retail and jobs that are out there’.
Krysten Bury, Senior Rehabilitation Consultant, Port Augusta CRS Australia said, ‘Working with BIG W has created great opportunities for our job seekers. People with disability contribute significantly to their community and are valued employees who bring a range of diverse skills and talent to the workplace’.
