Creating a supportive environment for job seekers
Master Instruments is a manufacturer, assembler and distributor of portable batteries, battery packs and test equipment in Marrickville, NSW. The company first employed a job seeker with a disability through CRS Australia in 1999 and have not looked back.
Production Supervisor, Ian, was extremely impressed with the job seeker's performance and was keen to continue employing people with a disability. Master Instruments worked with CRS Australia to develop an on-the-job training program designed to help people with a disability gain work.
The training program allows job seekers to develop work conditioning skills such as communicating with others, problem solving and teamwork. Master Instruments ensures the program is flexible and supportive for job seekers, using training modules tailored to suit individual ability and needs.
Since starting the training program, Master Instruments has trained over 33 people with a range of physical and psychological disabilities and employed 16 people; 13 of whom are still with the company.
Ian says, ‘There are also opportunities for career progression and many of the staff that have a disability have gone on to more senior positions within the company’.

Over the past 10 years the percentage of staff with a disability has increased and the company has experienced steady improvements in production and output, increased sales and low staff turnover. The training program is part of the recruitment policy and is extending into other areas of the business.
Steriani, CRS Australia Employment Services Consultant, says, ‘If we have a job seeker who needs a supportive environment, we know the Master Instruments team will do anything they can to help’.
In 2008, Master Instruments were awarded a Diversity@Work award, recognising its commitment to providing employment opportunities to people with a disability.
