Collaboration gets winning results for job seekers

Delaware North Companies Australia (DNCA) and Swinburne TAFE have teamed together with CRS Australia to provide hospitality courses to people with a disability, injury or health condition. The collaboration has successfully helped many job seekers re-skill and gain work at Etihad Stadium.

Swinburne partnership

‘We wanted to increase diversity within the workplace and find other ways of sourcing reliable and skilled staff,’ said DNCA Recruitment Coordinator, Libby Howe.

Under the Swinburne Tap into Training (TAPIT) programs, which assist people over 40 and sole parents to develop new skills, four CRS Australia job seekers completed a 12-week Certificate III in Hospitality course.

The three day per week training included one day of work experience where job seekers gained practical skills in Swinburne’s Mecanix training restaurant in Prahran.

CRS Australia Rehabilitation Consultant, Ruth said, ‘Job seekers gained a theoretical understanding as well as practical experience, to become qualified and desirable candidates for DNCA.’

‘Seeing how job seekers worked at the training restaurant showed me how well they applied themselves within a fast paced environment and allowed me to ensure that positions offered at Etihad suited their needs and skill level,‘ Libby from DNCA said.

Swinburne TAPIT Coordinator, Margie Fry noted, ‘Companies like DNCA are increasingly seeing the value that people with a disability, injury or health condition can bring to the workplace, such as life and work experiences, commonsense, reliability and willingness to learn new skills.’

All CRS Australia job seekers who participated were successful in gaining employment at Etihad Stadium.

'I think my confidence has been boosted very much but I would not have been here without the support of CRS Australia, Swinburne and Delaware.'

One CRS Australia job seeker, Donna Ferrier, who had suffered a back injury, is now a Food and Beverage Attendant at Etihad Stadium within the Corporate  Suites Team.

‘Donna is a star performer in our Corporate Suites Team,’ said Libby.

‘I really enjoyed the course at Swinburne and I love working on different events at Etihad. I think my confidence has been boosted very much but I would not have been here without the support of CRS Australia, Swinburne and Delaware,’ Donna said.

‘Donna is just one successful employee,’ Libby said. ‘Other job seekers that have come through from CRS Australia have also become valuable employees. Their enthusiasm, commitment and positive performance has opened doors for them to work at other events and organisations. It is also rewarding for us to see them become confident and happy individuals who look forward to each day. We believe that this is only just the beginning.’
