Building a new life

After coming to Australia in 2004, Simon, a 45-year-old Sudanese labourer, spent a tough couple of years in and out of work.
‘I was separated from my wife and two young children,’ says Simon. ‘I had to work very hard to provide for my family who were living in Sudan and the Philippines.’
But Simon had a passionate vision of starting a new life with his family in Australia.
A slip in the shower in December 2006 resulted in surgery.
Given Simon’s financial commitments, he had to continue his labouring work, even after the surgery. Within months Simon re-injured his back and was once again unemployed.
Simon was referred to CRS Australia’s Swan Hill office. At initial meetings with his rehabilitation consultant Kara Brown, it became apparent that Simon’s physical injury was only one barrier he was facing. Simon was also desperate to be reunited with his family.
Kara assessed Simon’s condition and created a rehabilitation program that could help him work in a similar position using his transferable skills from previous jobs.
‘CRS Australia changed my life completely, the staff were fantastic and so helpful.’Simon, storeman
He was provided with a back brace, had physiotherapy and was given exercises to do at home. After just a few months, Simon built up his strength and felt in control of his back condition.
CRS Australia’s employment services consultant Steve Mitchell worked at the same time as Kara to get Simon work-ready.
‘I started to think about the jobs that would match his personality,’ says Steve. ‘He had a positive attitude and enthusiastic nature that radiates to everyone around him.’
Steve prepared Simon for interviews and taught him how to write a resume. After making connections with employers, Simon attended his first interview as a storeman at a manufacturing warehouse.
‘I was nervous but tried to remember everything that Steve taught me!’ says Simon.
He was offered the position immediately and soon saved enough money to relocate his family to Australia.
Simon has been enjoying his job as a storeman for over a year. His hardworking nature and positive attitude have really paid off.
‘They made a difference in my life and gave me the trust. If it wasn’t for them, I would not have been able to work,’ says Simon.
