Being Active Reduces the Mental Health Risk

8 October 2006

The Mental Health Council of Australia (MHCA) and CRS Australia are working together to promote World Mental Health Week and the simple actions people can take to maintain and strengthen their mental health.

The Council campaign for Mental Health Week is 'Be Active for Your Mental Health: Act, Belong, Commit.'

'The focus of World Mental Health Day 2006 is on raising awareness of mental health and reducing the risks of suicide,' Council CEO John Mendoza said.

'During Mental Health Week we are continuing to promote the simple actions people can take to maintain and strengthen their mental health, and to build stronger communities. Being active in personal and community life are some of the most important things you can do to reduce the risk of mental illness.'

CRS Australia helps people with a mental condition on their journey to recovery. 'More than one quarter of CRS Australia's job seekers are people whose primary disability is mental health related,' said Margaret Carmody, General Manager CRS Australia. 'We have significant experience in supporting Australians with mental health conditions remain in, or commence, employment.'

'CRS Australia encourages activities, like those in the Be Active for Your Mental Health campaign, as a way to generate good mental health and prepare our job seekers to get back into the workforce.'

The Be Active For Your Mental Health campaign is based on research and a campaign developed by Professor Rob Donovan and colleagues at the Centre for Behavioural Research at Curtin University.

Be Active For Your Mental Health promotes three significant but simple messages:
Act – Strive to keep yourself as active as possible, physically, socially and mentally — walk, swim, read…
Belong – Connect to your community — join a group, chat to a neighbour, meet a friend, invite someone out…
Commit – Look to the future and have a go — take a challenge, get involved, volunteer…
