Age is no barrier

Marcus is a confident and happy 55 year old with a new lease on life. However, in January 2007 when he was referred to CRS Australia’s Wonthaggi office in Victoria life was not so good. Marcus had been out of full-time work since 1992 and had a 25 year history of lower back problems.
Marcus was in a lot of pain and in poor health. He also lacked confidence as he felt his age was restricting his chances of finding a job. Marcus worked with rehabilitation consultant, Julie Fuentes to challenge his beliefs about not being able to find a suitable job and to build his confidence.
‘When I first started working with Marcus he lacked self esteem and didn’t think he could get work because of his age and his lower back condition. As Marcus’s confidence started to grow he realised that it was possible for him to find a fulfilling job,’ says Julie.
Julie helped Marcus with résumé preparation and he participated in Wonthaggi’s Employment Action Group, a program that looks at the hidden job market, canvassing employers, disclosing disability and preparing for interviews.
After reviewing his transferable skills from years as an electrician, Julie suggested a suitable job could be sales in an electrical department. To build his work skills, Marcus did two short courses – electrical tagging and testing, and basic
computer skills.
'I'm feeling a lot fitter, the pain is still there sometimes but I'm much better. I'm more confident and much happier!'Marcus, Electrical Store Salesperson
While completing these courses, Shorelec Electrical Wholesalers called CRS Australia for help to fill a job vacancy in its sales area. Marcus seemed like a great fit. To assess how he would manage the duties of the job, CRS Australia placed Marcus into a four week on-the-job training program.
His placement was a success. In December 2008, Marcus started permanent part-time work with Shorelec, and his hours are gradually increasing. He proved to himself that age is no barrier to starting a new career.
Since starting work, Marcus said, ‘I’m feeling a lot fitter, the pain is still there sometimes but I’m much better. I’m more confident and much happier!’
