Finding the confidence to move on

Photograph of job seeker Wayne in Townsville

Wayne, 25, had worked as a real estate agent with Actons Commercial and Industrial for over a year until the pain from a femoral nerve injury became too painful to continue.

He suffered significant muscle wasting and weakness, which led to his left foot turning inwards. He walked on the edge of his foot, causing intense pain and restricting his mobility.

Although Wayne was able to find an alternative job, he was again unable to continue working due to his condition. Centrelink referred him to CRS Australia’s Townsville office.

Wayne worked with his rehabilitation consultant, Terri-Ann, to develop ways to manage his pain and identify suitable employment.

‘Staying motivated was also a challenge for Wayne in the beginning,’ Terri-Ann says.

‘But we worked together as a team to uncover his ambitions. As soon as he knew what he wanted to do, he went for it.’

When someone has faith in you it gives you the confidence to move on.

Wayne wanted to continue working in the real estate industry and, having already completed a Certificate IV in Real Estate, he was on track but needed some assistance to manage his pain.

Property management was identified as a possibility as it involved more administrative work and less walking.

Terri-Ann helped Wayne to talk with his manager about returning to the company in a different role.

Terri-Ann conducted a workstation assessment to make sure Wayne was sitting correctly and that his work would not cause him any more pain.

Now that Wayne is back at work, he says he has Terri-Ann to thank.

‘When someone has faith in you it gives you the confidence to move on. Terri-Ann always had faith that I could do it.’
