A new chapter

For years, Christine struggled to recover from a traumatic chapter in her life which resulted in her suffering from chronic anxiety and low self-esteem. She held a part-time cleaning job but wanted to do more and needed some direction.
‘I wanted to be able to respect myself as a fully functioning, productive, mature woman. In order to be the kind of person I wanted to be, I needed a job I felt not only competent doing, but proud of doing,’ she said.
Home alone on New Years Eve 2005, she wrote herself a list of goals to achieve before turning 50 at the end of the year. She wrote ’I will have a better job than the one I have got’. The only challenge was figuring out how to find it.
A wonderful new chapter of my life has begun!Christine, South Australia
Christine approached Centrelink for help and was referred to CRS Australia’s Goodna office in Queensland. Her rehabilitation consultant, Sally, did a vocational assessment with Christine to help draw out her thoughts on suitable work options. It was during this assessment that Christine’s whole outlook on life changed.
‘The assessment helped me uncover my love of books and the written word, and from that moment, I haven’t looked back!’ says Christine.
Sally worked with Christine to help her understand and manage her depression. When she felt ready, Christine welcomed Sally’s assistance to develop her resume and build her job searching skills.
An opportunity arose for work experience at the Griffith University library and with encouragement and support from Sally, Christine took up the opportunity. In her first week, Christine’s supervisor was impressed by her passion and enthusiasm and encouraged her to apply for a permanent position. Sally helped her complete an application for the job of returning books to the shelves.
She didn’t get the position. Instead, her supervisor offered her the role of Library Loans Officer. Christine couldn’t believe it!
‘If anyone told me five or six years ago how my life would be today, I could never have imagined it. A wonderful new chapter of my life has begun!’
