Having the ability to do the job

Nick, outside and on the job

It’s not often that you find a company where all employees have a disability. That’s what makes Tasmanian surveying company Lark & Creese Land and Engineering Surveyors so special.

Owner Nick says, ‘My policy is to continue employing people with a disability as long as they have the ability to do the job’.

Over the last four years, Lark & Creese have employed five CRS Australia job seekers who all proved their ability to manage the job during work experience opportunities.

Mr Creese says, ‘Giving job seekers an opportunity like this allows me to provide a technical induction, train them on-the-job and ensure they are coping with the transition back to work.

‘On completion of the work experience I can consider them for paid employment. It’s a win-win situation for my business and the job seekers.’

Many of the job seekers who have undertaken work experience with Lark & Creese had previously been unemployed for a number of years and had multiple barriers to employment.

One CRS Australia job seeker had established a successful business in the graphic design area. However, due to severe anxiety and the pressures of the work he was unable to continue.

Mr Creese recalls, ‘During his work experience he was able to regain his confidence and insight into his skills and suitability for computer aided drafting (CAD). He now works part time with us and part time with another surveying firm’.

Lark & Creese also sponsor employees for additional study.

‘My employees are committed and hard working so it makes sense to support them through continued learning and development’, says Mr Creese.

‘Although people see Lark & Creese as assisting CRS Australia job seekers to find employment, I believe they are actually assisting the company in improving and growing the business through their dedication and strong work ethic.’
